Reign: Tipu Sultan ruled Mysore from 1782 to 1799, succeeding his father, Sultan Hyder Ali. Under his leadership, Mysore became a powerful and prosperous state.
Military Leadership: Tipu Sultan was an exceptional Military Strategist and Tactician. He waged several Wars against the British East India Company, known as the Anglo-Mysore Wars. His use of advanced military techniques, including rocketry in warfare, earned him a significant place in military history.
Anglo-Mysore Wars: Tipu fought four wars against the British:
Death and Legacy: Tipu Sultan died fighting the British during the Siege of Srirangapatna in 1799, making him a symbol of Resistance against colonialism. His death marked the end of Mysore's independence, and the kingdom fell under British control.
Innovations: Tipu was known for his administrative reforms, modernization of his army, and fostering trade and commerce. He also introduced a new currency system and supported technological advancements, including the use of Mysorean rockets.
Legacy as the „Tiger“: The title „Tiger of Mysore“ is linked to Tipu Sultans bravery and tenacity in battle. Legend has it that he fought a tiger bare-handed, which became a symbol of his strength and resistance. The Tiger-Motif was often used in his Throne, Weapons and State-Emblems.
Tipu Sultan remains a controversial but highly respected figure in Indian history, particularly for his resistance to British imperialism.
